Step off an inbound Metra train in downtown Glen Ellyn this month and the block across from the platform looks like a striking cluster: a Chicago brewery's first-ever suburban location, a longstanding cocktail bar, and a homegrown apothecary, all within an easy walk of each other. The space used to be a fly-fishing shop. Co-owner Chad Hauge hand-tiled the wall mosaic himself, and a Chicago upholsterer built the 17-foot communal bench that still anchors the room.

The people behind it weren't newcomers guessing at what the suburbs wanted. Co-owner Mike Melazzo grew up in the Glen Ellyn and Wheaton area and went to Wheaton Academy. Hauge graduated from Wheaton College, the "ever dry" school a few miles down the road. Both men had sharpened their craft as beverage directors at Mott St. and Longman & Eagle in Chicago before bringing that same technique back to the block where one of them grew up. Hauge's wife, Alicia, rounds out the team, with a background in catering and events at Bang Bang Pie and behind the bar at Intelligentsia Coffee.

The bet was specific: that a town most people associated with commuter rail and Sunday dinners would support the kind of cocktail list usually found in Wicker Park or Logan Square. Reviewers have called finding a bar of this caliber in a smaller town like Glen Ellyn a genuine surprise. Maplewood's suburban debut

Maplewood Brewery & Distillery had been pouring beer and spirits out of its Logan Square flagship since 2014 and had never opened outside Chicago city limits. Then this spring, it did, choosing a storefront two doors from Common Good.

Maplewood Public House opened May 8, 2026, at 486 Pennsylvania Ave, in the space that used to be Two Hound Red Brewing Co. Founding brewer and CEO Adam Cieslak said the company had always dreamed of growing beyond the city in a way that still felt like Maplewood, and that Glen Ellyn offered the blend of community, walkability, and small-town charm the brand was looking for. The kitchen matches the ambition. The menu is curated by Chef Joanna Janczurewicz, a Jean Banchet award nominee who brings her cooking from Maplewood's Chicago Lounge out to Glen Ellyn, and early reviews have singled out the smash burgers, cheese curds, and dumplings alongside the beer list. As of today, the Public House has added Monday hours from 4 to 10 p.m. for football season, which means the space that sat closed on Mondays all summer is now open six days a week.

The homegrown shop that grew into the gap

The third business on this stretch didn't arrive from Chicago at all. à la main, a sustainable apothecary and refillery, opened its first storefront in January 2023 at 577 Pennsylvania Ave. Its founders, Jill and Emily, are neighbors who started the shop after their own separate efforts to cut toxic products out of their households. By June of that year, the in-house skincare line was available to retailers nationwide.

PFLAG DuPage, a volunteer organization that has served the western suburbs since 2004, was on hand offering information and support. Organizers said the goal was for the event to become a new Glen Ellyn summer tradition, not a one-time promotion.
